Publika Motor Treasure Hunt

3 March 2012 - Only managed to get a full team to take part in the last week before registration ends with Fong's confirmation. With that, we get the team of Angie, Wee Kiat, Fong and myself. Was trying hard to push for this hunt.

We started on the wrong foot. Without going through the tulips direction, I told the team that we are starting with Q23-30 which was the Mall hunt part. Unknown to me, Q1-4 was also a walk hunt in the exterior of Publika, while Q23-30 was inside the Mall. While everyone was hunting outside the Mall, we were the only team inside the Mall. Sensing something not quite right, I asked the COC and was told that we were supposed to do Q1-4 first, which was clearly written in the tulips. I tried to call the team, no one picked up my call. But then I saw they were already outside the Mall looking for answers. Flouted the very basic treasure hunt rule - did not read tulips and instructions - from the very beginning. We were out there looking for answers to the four questions, but could not find two. And we took about an hour and could only found the two answers. Then we decided to move on the next part - the motor part and drove out from the Mall. As I was leaving the Mall, I already have a bad feeling over the whole thing. Are we again going back not within the Top 10, as in the Empire Hunt??

The next sector at Sri Hartamas wasn't too good as well, only get 1 out of 3 questions there. Then it was Desa Sri Hartamas and it was a breeze through as we get the next four questions driving through. Then it was Damansara Heights (CIMB office area) and then back to the Mall for the last portion of the Mall walk hunt part.

Dinner for the hunt was served at night in Publika. That was one of the best hunt buffet ever tasted. Then Q&A time. Calculated our score to be 145 points out of maximum of 175. Thought that was not too bad. When it was announced that the 10th place team scored 135 points, my heart sank as I thought we would not be able to get into Top 5, though we would have been guaranteed a prize which would at least cover our expenses. Then it announced the 9th place, then 8th, 7th, 6th, 5th, 4th, 3rd and we were still not being called out. Finally for the 2nd place winner with 150 points, it was team No. 6 which is ours. RM1600 cash prize for the second place team. Although the champion team took home RM400 more, it would also be promoted to the Non-beginner list of Trialblazers. So we still keep out Beginners Status which enables us to take in the Beginners category.

I think we are now a stage where we too far away from the Master/Non Beginners/Diamond category, but we are at the top of the Beginners/Gold category. Hopefully I get the team to hunt more often and move on the higher category for personal satisfaction. But of course, winning then would become very, very difficult.

Treasure Hunt Society of Malaysia Treasure Hunt League

11 February 2012 - Treasure Hunt League Leg 1

Ever since the Society announced the starting a Treasure Hunt league, I have waited anxiously for it. It was supposed to be held last year, but was postpone to this year.

The failure to get a full team to hunt most the time was quite frustrating. Missed out on some of the hunts that wanted to go. This league series is easier as it only requires 2 to form a team. So teaming up with Wee Kiat, we set out for the first hunt of the year.

Hunt fee was RM10 for members, which both of us are. Walk hunt, petrol cost zero. So it was just an investment or RM10. Cheap.. Cheap...

When I first started to hunt, we would stack the car with thick dictionaries of various kinds. Later Angie brought along a digital dictionary with thesaurus function. Nowadays, we simply go for hunt with a smart mobile phone - one that can access the net for wiki, dictionary, thesaurus etc. However, I still noticed for most Master teams, they still bring along thick dictionaries/thesaurus. Was this their secret to become Masters?

This first leg consists of 20 route and 2 treasure questions to be done within 3 hours in a hot and blazing afternoon sun (3pm to 6pm) at Bangsar. Towards the end (about 5.30pm), the rain started to pour. So it was shine and rain for a walk hunt. The 2 most irritating weather conditions for walk hunt.

Final results: Third place with 64 points. Drop 4 route questions and both treasures. Sob..Sob... Both treasure questions. How pathetic...

Of the 4 route questions, should be able to crack 2 of them if only we had 'opened up' the net in our small smart phone to look for synonyms of some words. But we had not taken that trouble then. Lessons learned.

The prize: RM60 for third place. Just nice to cover Hunt Fee (RM20), Banana Leaf Rice Dinner at Devi's Corner Bangsar, venue for the hunt (RM31) and parking (RM9).

We are now at joint fifth place in the league with 20 points. The winner (individual) of the league walks off with RM1000. Can't wait for the next leg.

Explore Johor Treasure Hunt 2011

23 July 2011 - Explore Johor Treasure Hunt 2011

Second hunt in Johor. Again teamed up with my colleagues - with Tine, Izat and Wati.

A hunt to promote tourism in Johor, with the main sponsor from Johor Corporation. About 50 teams competed in this hunt. Most of them are hunting for the first time. Therefore the questions are more direct translation from English to Malay and vice-versa. Not much cryptic knowledge required. 30 route questions, 5 treasures (one of them is to purchase a local made yoghurt in one of the pit stops), 20 car challenge questions which answers are to get from the web, 5 pit stops where at each pit stop answers to questions are to be found at the pit stops.

The hunt flagged off from Johor Bahru and ended at Tanjung Leman, which is the ferry terminal to Pulau Sibu. The route of the hunt was actually posted in FB before the start of hunt.

Overall it was not difficult, as compared to those more cryptic type question found in KL based hunt. But I was able to fully concentrate, as we have problems with the tulip. Was to concern as to whether we are heading to the right direction and whether we are in the right sector for the questions. These worries were not unfounded as we really look for answers at the 2 wrong sectors. These caused to miss out some time at the first wrong sector, and missed out one answer at the second wrong sector.

We were the 8th team to check in at the finish control - and we were 9 minutes late. The green horns at the field were this obvious. Final result - 3rd place (again!!!). Hopefully, the next hunt will be different, and better...

The third placing team with the RM1000 cash prize and Ayamas hamper

The Champion, Second and Third Placing teams

And, ya, we won a lucky draw prize as well. A 2day-1night stay Sibu Island Resort. There were 5 draw prizes. Ours was the last drawn and the best. The rest were stay at Selesa Hotel at JB. Pasir Gudang, Port Dickson. It was indeed a 'lucky draw'.

Iskandar Puteri Heritage Race 2011

9 July 2011 - My first hunt in JB. And it's sponsored. Organized by IRDA, we were sponsored by IIB Sports Club, although it just cost RM40 per team.

Teamed up with my colleagues, Kartine - AVP for Planning and Norliza - my EA. Kartine has participated in several hunts, but more on the Explorace type, while Liza is a first timer - more to make up the number.

Although this is not an Explorace type, but the questions were far from the normal cryptic type. More of the word substitution. Therefore as long as you know your BM to English or vice-versa well, it should not be any problem. The hunt consists of 30 route questions, 5 treasures and 10 bonus questions

Our results - 29/30 route questions, 4/5 treasures and 6/10 bonus questions. Placed third.

Prize presentation - in the middle is Tine and Liza on the right

With the winning team, the team from Legoland. A champion and third placing for Iskandar.

Target for the next JB hunt, The Johor Discovery Hunt on 23 July 2011. First prize RM4000 cash. Looking forward to that.

Treasure Hunt Weekend

The last time I hunted was the Maritime Hunt with WK, Jess and Emily. That was in 23 Oct 2010. We had the satisfaction of being the 'best' among the worst. Placed at No.7, we were the best placed team after all the Masters.

There was other hunt which I was supposed to go, but had pulled out at the last minute because of office instruction to make a trip to Yogjakarta.

So for the weekend of 11th and 12th of June 2011, I managed to get the teams for 2 hunts over the 2 days.

11 June 2011 - ESG Beginners' Hunt at Empire Shopping Gallery, Subang Jaya. Teaming with WK, Fong and Emily, I was hoping to be able to repeat our winning performance of Tropicana Hunt. The lack of hunting really showed in the hunt. We were not even in the Top 10, in a Beginners' Hunt that attracts 2 masters teams. Our score was in the range of 75%. A total disaster.

12 June 2011 - Hospice Klang. We have always being very supportive of this hunt. This time teaming with WK, Jess and Emily, this is yet another hunt which showed our lack of hunting. Score is 60%. But we should be more proud of this result, as it was not supposed to be an easy hunt. All the top teams were there. I was not expecting a top 10 finish.

Although came out empty handed in both hunts, there was some positive outcome from both days outings - got back in the mode and mood of hunting and to do some charity works for Hospice Klang.

Hopefully, we will be able to get more time for hunting as I believe we can only do better.

Bio-Life Walk A Hunt

2 August 2009 - The third in a series of Walk Hunt by Bio-Life, after Ipoh and Penang, finally comes to KL. Wasn't sure why the organizers asked us to be there by 7am. We were the first at the flag-off point at Hotel Sentral in Brickfields. Crazily we waited until about 8am, when only they start the morning, pre-hunt, work-out session, something which they did in the previous 2 legs as well. Then the briefing and finally flag-off at about 8.30am, 30 minutes before the official flag-off time of 9am.

Despite the additional 30 minutes free time given, we finished the hunt at 1217pm. 17 minutes after the end time of 12noon. This cause us a penalty of 17 points. 1 point per minute. A record for us.

Flag-off from Hotel Sentral, Brickfields

At the end, it was good enough for a podium finish at No.5 - losing out to 1 regular and 3 other non-regular teams. The prize was a 3 smaller bottles of Bio-life product, with a market value of about slightly more than RM100. Not bad for a hunt fee of RM30.

Prizes for the Winners - but ignore those electrical goods. They were merely there for decorative purposes only. Not given out as prizes. The prizes were those Bio-life hampers on top of the table.

Well, was this a good hunt? Yes and No. Yes, because it was another podium finish, despite the master and more regular hunters were not around. No, as we could have fared better.

Again, we were let down by treasures. Only managed to get 1 out of 2 - losing out by 10 points. And that big fat penalty points - 17. We were still trying to look for answers during that 17 minutes penalty time, but we got zero answer. Therefore nonsensically wasted 17 points. So for the next hunt, must get full treasure points and NO penalty time points.

And, the team this time - WK, Angie and my cousin, Jessica.

The next leg - Mallaca, Here we come.

Kaspersky / PJ Blogger Carnival Hunt

20 June 2009 - A two hour walk hunt around Jaya33 mall.

Despite being only 2 hours, it was an action packed hunt. 10 hunt questions, 3 spot-the-tagline questions, 5 spot-the-cropped-picture questions, 3 challenges and 2 treasures. The 3 challenges are: Challenge 1 - 5 questions about PJ to be answered within 1 minute, just before flag off; Challenge 2 - strike a pose with the Kaspersky cardboard for the camera; Challenge 3 - 10 online questions on Kaspersky - hunters are given a notebook to search for answer online. Challenges 2 and 3 are to be completed within the 2 hours hunt time.

The team for this hunt - Fong, Angie, Sallehudin (hunt with him for the first time) and myself. To start off, Angie did the picture questions, I tackled the tagline questions and Fong/Din did the hunt question. We answered all questions. But during the answer presentation, found out that we were wronged on 2 hunt questions. We cracked both, but did not write the full answer. We only got half the online questions in Challenge 3 right. Simply because again we did not provide the full answer. Fong googled the question for the answer instead of going into the directed website to look for answer. Our answers were not complete. These probably caused us a top 3 position.

Final result: 4th placing. I think we did pretty well to outplace some of the Masters' team.

Hospice Klang Treasure Hunt

19 April 2009 - This is my third Hospice Klang hunt.

The first was in 2006 - then teaming with WK, Angie and Wong PW. This is the hunt that supposedly ended the hunting life of Mr. Wong. We went home empty handed. The second was in 2007 - with WK and Angie. The first time where there was only 3 members and we won a prize - 10th place. An achievement. This year we - myself, WK and Angie - teamed up with Fong.

Unlike the previous year, where the hunt flagged off at the Klang Hokkien Association, this year was in Klang Executive Club. As such we missed out on the Association's Bak-kut-teh breakfast. So, no breakfast this year, but we have the Starbuck's Coffee - provided FOC to participating hunters.

During briefing, the COC mentioned that the first question would be a tough one. I repeated that to the rest. So, in a certain way it brought the mood down, and what's more early, early morning trying to crack a difficult question, psychologically we were already out. The question is actually straight forward, but its the spotting the right words 'within' that is not working.

Hunt briefs:
30 questions - 15 in Part 1, finish that and exchange for another 15 in Part 2 at mid-point control - 5 points each - total 150 points
2 Treasures - 10 points each - total 20 points

I guess this could be considered as one of the easier hunt, with 5-6 tough ones - which need to crack the brain slightly more. The rest should be a breeze for regulars. In the first part, we actually spent about 20 minutes (or perhaps more) on a question for the fugitive.

Overall, it is a good hunt for us, as far as points and positions are concerned. We were placed 7th with 145 points (out of a total 170 points) - dropping 5 questions. We even out-placed some of the Master teams.

Honda Hunt

15 March 2009 - The second hunt of the year. Angie finally managed to get Chuah to join and we just pay RM100 per car for using a Honda car. For those using non-Honda cars, the fee is RM150 per car. The fourth member is WK.

The COC - Michael Pang. Our first hunt with Michael Pang was the Earthquake Relief in 1/1/2006 (if memory is correct). After the hunt, we vouch never to go for another of Mike's hunt. Of course later, teaming up with Fong, we went for TB hunt. After that, we did not go another of Mike's hunt. Both killer hunt, as far we are concerned.

This hunt was no exception. Answered 10/35 route questions, 1/5 treasures and the 5/5 giveaway Honda Prestige bonus questions.

But I like this hunt for some reason. I like the way the questions are crafted with the definition given. We were able to crack some of the crytic clues, but observation to find the answers failed us. To me, the most horrible was the treasures. Crafted in only 1 sentence, it was a killer to us.

HRU Hunter's Challenge

1 March 2009 - HRU Hunter's Challenge

The first hunt of the year.

Every one in the treasure hunt fraternity could not have not heard of Hunters-R-Us. They are probably of the best team around. And they have decided to embark on a new challenge for themselves and the rest of the hunters. As the hunt got closer, one of their team maters was seriously ill and the intention of organizing the hunt has shifted to dedicated the hunt to that team member.

I would always want to hunt if it falls on a Sunday. When the hunt was announced, I tried to get my team to hunt, but unfortunately, 2 of them were unable to make. When it announced that the hunt would be for the benefit of the ill HRU team member, I got in contact with the organizer, whom 'match-make' me and my other team member with 2 of his colleagues to form a team. So for the second time, hunting with 2 strangers (the first being last year Sun Hunt).

I was not in my best mood that morning, and it affected my performance and probably the team. Surprisingly, we finished at position No.14 with 43 points - scoring 10 route question (30points), 2 treasures (10 points) and 1 3-Blind-Mice (3 points). I contributed 3 of the 10 route questions.

There are much discussion on the hunt by the 'Kutuk King' of the hunting community. I felt that he is really dissatisfied with the whole hunt - every single aspect of it.

BlogCe5nt of the HRU, whom the hunt was dedicated to has something to say in their blog. And I strongly believe Mr. Kutuk needs to open up his heart and mind and acknowledge that the hunt is theirs and it their perrogative to make it their way, either you love it or not.

Take a cue from Mr. Mike Pang:
Quote from Mike's Blog: "Now, every CoC is free to pitch their hunts in what ever way they like. They don’t have to follow a set formula. So having said all the above I don’t mean to say that HrU is wrong. I’m merely reviewing the 2 areas vis-a vis to their publically stated goals for this particular hunt. If moving forward HrU chooses to be known as a CoC with tough questions and tight timing, so be it. Nothing’s wrong with that."

Mr. Kutuk, move on, please.

The questions for the hunt and the explanations to the answers are in HRU blog and will not be repeated here.

Christmas Charity Hunt

29 December 2008 - Christmas Charity Hunt

The last hunt of the year. I started driving from Ipoh at 6.30am to reach KL at 8.30 for the hunt. My car was parked at Jaya33 and the guys just drove 'from the back' at the church to Jaya to fetch me.

To me, this is one of the easier hunt. Our team has started hunting for some years now. I am in the third year, the rest maybe a year or two more. But lately we have not been that regular. To put us in the novice category seems a little 'fresh' for us as we are not that new to treasure hunting. Putting us in the regular with Master level questions, we would have surrendered after the first 3 questions. So this is a case neither here nor there. But what the heck, this is Christmas and time for joy. So we go the novice category and have some fun.

The first 2 questions was a roadblocked for us. After circulating 3 rounds along the sector, we still could not find the answer and decided to leave and come back later, since the finishing control is just nearby. This prove to be a good decision.

At the end, we finished at fifth, dropping 3 route questions and 1 treasure. The treasure where we should have been correct. But somehow, 1 liter seems to equal 'less than 1000ml' then. We got two hampers and we donated one back for charity. I posted some comments in the HRU's blog pertaining to some of the question. Take a look and see.

Anyway, that is it for 2008. Have some wonderful hunts especially during the second half of the year. To all that I have partnered for hunt this year: Wee Kiat, Fong, Angie, Joyce, Jessica, Anthony, Wai Chee and another guy for the Sun Hunt (which forgot his name) - Thanks for a good hunt year. New Year resolution - more hunts.

Nissan Treasure Hunt 2008

29-30 November 2008 - The third hunt of the month. Sort of a record. This time was teaming with Fong, Angie and Wai Chee aka Fong's friend aka the Nissan Car owner.

The Nissan Team (from left - Yours truly, Fong, Wai Chee & Angie

It's a two-day hunt to Penang. First stop from KL to Bukit Beruntung. Then to Ipoh, Taiping and finally the last sector at Seberang Jaya, with the finish control at Nissan showroom at Seberang Jaya.

At the final briefing, noted 3 master's team, while the rest are mainly family teams, mostly first timers. Therefore, I was quite confident to finish at least at the top four. When the final results was announced, we came in fifth. Lost to another team by a single solitary point. Quite disappointed though. However, in this hunt, sometime happen for the first time. I was in a team that managed to pick up a lucky draw prize. Really the first time since hunting. And we were the first team to be picked - Team No.11. At the end, we managed to win (inclusive of the lucky draw prize of a service voucher by Tan Chong Motors which naturally goes to Wai Chee) a RM100 Genting Holiday Card (this goes to me), RM200 spa voucher (Angie took this) and a Pensonic cordless phone (goes to Fong). Well, each one took home something. The hotel is nice, the dinner food is above average. And we pay only RM100 for registration fee. A satisfying hunt.

The Agony of What and Where?

Two weeks back at the UMIC Hunt, the Purple Antz people said they have many What and Where questions. But I guess if that was a record, then the record was broken by YS Khong in this hunt. I don't have question paper with me, but my estimate is that it should be at least 80%. And that's where crushed our chances of a Top 4 finishing. Big lessons to be learnt here.

3rd UMIC Treasure Hunt

16 November 2008 (Sunday) - Second hunt of the month. My first with the COC - Purple Antz. Team members - WK, Angie and my cousin Jess. Hunting with Jess for the first time.

My turn to drive. The hunt was a disastrous. I don't have our 'official' score yet, but it is definetely one of our worst performance. Out of 28 (or 29) teams, we were not even placed among the top 17. Most of the questions looked foreign to us. We were simply blanked out. We really felt that the questions were either wrongly set or we were directed to the wrong sectors. However, when the answers were revealed, it really make sense. And I believe that are much to be learnt from this hunt. After submitting the answers, most agree that this will be our last hunt with the Antz, but after the answer presentation, I did have a change of mind. I might just be registering (and dragging my kakis along) for their next hunt in December - MIYC, a day before the last Grand Slam of the year, the Mensa Hunt.

The Sun Motor Hunt - Post Mortem

The Mother of all Hunts was here and gone. This is my third Sun Hunt, but for reasons that are not known to me myself as well, I was actually very excited about the hunt. It was the first hunt since the Bukit Bintang Boys hunt in July.

This year instead of teaming up with my usual 'hunt-kaki', I had two newbies and one regular 'kaki' as team members. Due to them being new, I had to force one of them to be the driver.

The first leg at Kota Damansara was a disaster, as far as I am concerned. Arriving at Kota Damansara, we were very quick to solve Question 5, and then we thought the sector for Questions 1-5 was along the shop for Q5 answer, but it turned out not to be. Due to a miscommunication with the regular 'kaki', I ended up in another wrong location/sector for Q1-5. By then I was completely lost. Throughout the whole time at Kota Damansara, my brain was 'malfunctioned'. And we actually spent the most time here. Lucky, my regular kaki performed here, and he supplied most of the answers. Leaving Kota Damansara to Sunway Damansara was better for me, as I started to pick back pieces of my shattered brains and put it in function mode.

Control point at Sunway toll makes us lost about ten minutes waiting for the McD's to pack our lunch. They should get all these ready, as in the case of last year hunt, where it was all nicely packed and waiting to be collected. After waiting for ten minutes, Joehari (the Sun paper guy) told that if we could not wait, we can come back later to collect. With another 2hours to finish time, we had no choice but to leave the place for the second leg - with a hungry stomach.

Fortunately, Leg 2 was easier for us. We combed this leg and the treasures in the 2hours and 10 minutes. Meaning we reached the finish control 10 minutes past the given 6hours. And we did better in this leg.

Overall, I felt this hunt is tougher than last year, probably due to the 'malfunctioned brain' during Leg 1. But came the surprise during the answers presentation. Our score this year was higher than last year, despite having two newbies on board. I cant remember exactly our position last year but it was between 90-100, but this year we finished at 56 - a quantum leap for us. Hopefully, with more practices, we can break into the top 20 next year. (Keeping our fingers crossed). It was a satisfying hunt. We improved on our position, score and of course the prize. All these despite with 2 freshies.

Lessons learned:
  • Time management - Well, this is already an old topic, but we, or rather I, seemed to have forgotten. Leg 1 took us from about 8am-12pm without stopping to get the treasure, while the Leg 2 was done in slightly more than 2hours. If we were to have spend a little more time here, we would have got the two questions we missed out on the sector at TTDI.
  • Task assignment - We should have left at two members on the sector at TTDI to try while the rest can leave to submit the answers or get two guys for the question and another two for treasures. That would have also probably gave the two questions at TTDI.
  • Treasures cracking - Solving treasure questions remains our weakest link. I, for one, is an idiot when cracking treasures. Need to pay more attention to treasures. Some help from anyone, please..

Clues Cracking

When I first hunt, my team mate gave some information on how to crack clues in treasure hunt question. Thought I share them with the newbies.

But this may be of use for the beginners only. The regulars or even semi-regulars may not find useful as all.

To qualify myself, these are comprehensive. There are more in the hunting world itself. This could at the very least help the beginners to crack the easier question.

Hope some of you may find this useful. Remember to thank me if this helps to win a prize in your next hunt.

Mother of All Hunts

The Sun Motor Hunt is back again.

This biggie will be held on 2 November 2008 (Sunday). Finally, a biggie that falls on Sunday. No need to take leave to take part (Sigh!)

This will be my 3rd Sun hunt. We won a Philips music player in 2006 and a Philips blender in 2007. The blender was placed on the cupboard, until recently my sis took it out and use.

This time round, I am aiming for a better prize - a DVD player. Was hoping to won that last year but no, we did not do that well.

For those taking part for the first time, as a friendly gesture, I will list down here the questions from last year hunt for you. I don't know of a better way to do so. If you want the hardcopy in the form of pdf file, you may email me. I will sent that to you.

My 1st Post

I created this profile several months ago. But has never blog, until now.

Why now? This is why:

Two reasons why I am interested in this. Firstly, surely because of the prize - a brand new mobile phone. Secondly, because of the hunt.

Samsung organized this event to introduce their latest product in Malaysia. And they only select nine (9) teams to take part. It was hinted somewhere that those with a car and a blog will have better chance of being selected. Call it 'cheap skate' - but I have to had this blog up in order to stand a chance of being selected.

I used to be a regular hunter. But due to work, I have cut down on hunts, as most hunts now are often held on Saturday. (I work on Saturdays and sometimes Sunday). I reckon this would be a very good trial, prior to the Mother of all Hunts - The Sun Motor Hunt, which will be held the day after ie. Sunday, 2 November 2008.

Taking part in this event will be like killing two birds with one stone.
